DNA testing is considered the most accurate means of determining parentage. It is performed by obtaining a buccal(mouth) swab from each involved individual. The samples are then submitted to a laboratory for analysis.

There are two types of DNA testing: legal and “at-home” (non-legal).  What sets them apart is that the former can be used for lawful purposes, while the latter cannot.

Legal DNA testing is facilitated only by neutral medical practitioners to ensure a “chain of custody”, which means the samples’ extraction, transport, receipt, and analysis are properly documented. Let us elaborate on its advantages further.

The Results Can Be Used As Evidence

For legal proceedings that involve the establishment of paternity, the court of law will honor the results of a legal DNA test as evidence. For example, when demanding child support, only a court-approved paternity test can prove or disprove the relationship between a child and his/her alleged father.

Other purposes that need legal DNA testing include inheritance claims, child custody/adoption arrangements, and defense from criminal accusations. For some countries, such tests are also required for visa approval. This proves that the applicant and sponsor are related to each other.

You Have Unbiased Witnesses

For court-admissible tests, only an independent third party may collect DNA samples and send them to a DNA testing center. The third-party can be a medical technologist or registered nurse who will also act as a witness.

As the sample collector is neither a relative nor an acquaintance, there are no biases toward any of the two test subjects. Manipulation of specimens or results is highly unlikely, assuring you of the truth.

Contamination of the Sample Can Be Avoided

Suppose a test is done outside of a proper facility. There is a risk of contaminating the sample, especially if the one conducting it has no background or training in medical procedures. They can unknowingly mix a foreign substance or DNA from another source into the sample due to mishandling.

A contaminated specimen can void the procedure or, worse, give a false-positive result. With legal DNA testing, every step of the way, from sample collection to analysis, is carried out by professionals. These people are trained to handle specimens safely. They ensure the integrity of the DNA sample to get accurate results.
