Three Types of Tests for Alcohol Testing

If you are operating a vehicle after a night out, or in the process of job hunting, you may be asked to submit an alcohol test.
An alcohol test measures the amount of blood alcohol content (BAC) in the blood stream or on one’s breath. In the United States, you are considered to be legally intoxicated if your BAC is 0.08% or greater.

To check an individual’s blood alcohol content, three tests are performed. These include:

1. Breath tests
Breath tests are the most common method to estimate and individual’s blood alcohol content. Providing immediate results, the whole process takes about a minute and involves an individual blowing into a breathalyzer. Some environmental factors can alter the test for inaccurate readings. The breath test is a recommended method for alcohol testing in the work place.

2. Blood Tests
If blood is drawn, consent is usually required. Blood is taken from the vein and the amount of alcohol inside the body is measured. Results can take 24 hours depending on the lab. Blood tests is another recommended method for alcohol testing in the work place.

3. Urine Tests
A standard urine test is less accurate than breath and blood tests. Therefore, an EtG (ethyl glucuronide) test is becoming a popular choice. An EtG test is a urine test that determines recent alcohol consumption. Urine testing is not recommended for alcohol testing in the work place.

These are three types of tests for alcohol testing, including breath, blood, and urine tests. It is important to drink responsibility, and if you have the opportunity to prepare for an alcohol test, refrain from using illegal drugs and do not consume alcohol 24 hours prior to the test.
