DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Training Overview

Employers with DOT-regulated drivers have specific responsibilities when managing drug and alcohol testing programs. Supervisor training helps designated personnel recognize physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators that may support a reasonable suspicion determination. Training can also help employers understand documentation procedures and their responsibilities under 49 CFR Part 382.

DOT clients will need to comply with CFR Part 40 382.603 and 382.307.

Each employer shall ensure that all persons designated to supervise drivers receive enough training. At least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and receive at least an additional 60 minutes of training on controlled substances use are needed. The training will be used by the supervisors to determine whether reasonable suspicion exists to require a driver to undergo testing under §382.307. The training shall include the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators of probable alcohol misuse and use of controlled substances. Recurrent training for supervisory personnel is not required.

This specific guideline states that the DER will need to be able to determine when Reasonable Suspicion testing should be conducted. Our training program are supervised by substance abuse professionals. The SAP program gives the DER the tools they need to administer their company's Drug Testing Program according to DOT regulations.

Monthly training provides convenient opportunities for new supervisors, DERs, collectors, and testing personnel to develop their knowledge. This training is great for Supervisors who are in very remote locations and need to be able to perform the collections themselves and then bring them to one of our locations, or we can give them shipping information for lab testing and how to perform on site rapid testing.
